Barrie Axford is Professor of Politics and Head of Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford Brookes University, UK. He has held posts at Stanford University and the University of Southampton and been Visiting Professor at the University of Genoa and Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.

Publications include: The Global System: Economics, Politics and Culture (1996); Politics: an Introduction (joint author -1997 and 2002); Unity and Diversity in the New Europe (joint editor), (2000) and The New Media and Politics (co- editor) (2001), as well as numerous articles and chapters in edited books. He is a member of the International Editorial Board of the Elsevier journal 'Telematics and Informatics' and of Editorial Board of the International Journal of 'Electronic Governance'. His long-term research interests are:

  • Theories of globalization
  • Global networks
  • Global civil society
  • New media
  • Democracy

Currently he is working on Theories of Globalization (forthcoming, Polity, 2007) and the organisation of a special issue of the journal Globalizations on Networks and Borders in the Global System, 'Politics'- UK (book, in press, 2006) and 'Europe and Cosmopolitanism' (book, in press, 2007). Also in preparation is a chapter for the Sage handbook on European Studies, (2008) and editing a special issue of the journal 'Globalizations' for 2007.

Richard Huggins is the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at Oxford Brookes University where he teaches postgraduate courses on research methods and democracy.
Richard has two main areas of research interests. The first is media, politics and democracy on which he has published a number of articles and chapters and a recent book entitled New Media and Politics (co-edited with Barrie Axford, London, Sage). He is currently working on a book on democracy and democratization (Routledge, forthcoming, 2004).
The second main area of research interest includes criminal and social justice, public order issues, community and urban renewal and substance misuse. In recent years he has conducted a number of commissioned research projects and consultancies for a range of local authorities, the Thames Valley Police, various Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs), Health Authorities and other statutory and voluntary organisations in substance misuse issues. These have included a study of crime, crack-cocaine and heroin use in Oxfordshire, Homelessness and Substance Misuse in Berkshire, Crack Cocaine and Stimulant misuse in Berkshire and an evaluation of Needle Exchange schemes in Oxfordshire.
Richard is currently involved in a community development project funded through the Communities Against Drugs (CAD) initiative of the Home Office’s Crime Reduction Unit. He is a member of the Drugs Prevention Advisory Service Regional Training Forum which is currently developing a integrated training strategy for both specialist drug and generic workers. He is also a member of the Partnership Board of the Leys Link Single Regeneration Board in Oxford.

Kim Francis is the IT Officer for the Scholarship of Engagement Project for Politics. She has a teaching background, and also has experience of writing for the web. She has a specific interest in the use of learning tools and technologies used on the web.
