The Scholarship of Engagement for Politics would like to announce a forthcoming conference:
The Scholarship of Engagement for Politics: Placement Learning, Employability and Citizenship
This is an FDTL/HEFCE Conference, to be held on the
10-11th June 2008, at
Scarman House Conference Centre,
University of Warwick.
Placement learning is potentially a very powerful pedagogical tool. It affords students an opportunity to observe how events play out in practice and to apply the theories and concepts of their courses to everyday situations, and it contributes to the personal development of students and improves their university experience. Placement learning is also a very effective means of addressing the employability agenda, which has become a key concern of both government and industry. Finally, it is a very effective way in which universities can engage with their local communities.
This conference will build on the results of The Scholarship of Engagement for Politics, a three-year project funded by HEFCE through its Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning. The project developed models of short placement learning opportunities for Politics and International Relations students from all backgrounds and levels of academic achievement. But the conference will also discuss broader issues of employability, active citizenship and community engagement. It should be of interest to educators in Politics, IR and the social sciences more generally concerned with issues of active learning, employability, and university-community engagement.
The conference keynote address will be delivered by Professor John Annette of Birkbeck College, University of London. Professor Annette is Dean of Faculty, Professor of Citizenship and Lifelong Learning and Pro-Vice Master for Widening Participation and Community Partnerships.
The conference explores the implications and impact of embedding placement learning within university programmes, including:
